How many stamps do I need to send letters within the United States?
To send a standard letter within the United States, you typically need one stamp if the letter weighs 1 ounce or less; this is usually a “Forever” stamp which covers the current first-class mail price.
Key points to remember:
- Weight matters: If your letter weighs more than 1 ounce, you will need additional postage in the form of extra stamps.
- Standard envelope size: This applies to regular, rectangular envelopes.
- Large envelopes: For larger envelopes, like legal size, you might need more than one stamp.
one stamp
If your letter is a standard-sized envelope and weighs 3.5 ounces or less, you will need one stamp. Large envelopes. This includes 9×12, legal, and manila envelopes, Two stamps are needed for the first ounce, and postage will be an additional $0.20 cents after.
For just 1 $0.60 First-Class Mail® Forever® stamp, you can send 1 oz (about 4 sheets of regular, 8-1/2″ x 11″ paper in a rectangular envelope) to anywhere in the U.S.! A standard first-class letter envelops of standard size (rectangular) within 1 ounce in weight (and no stiff or delicate things inside the envelope) is $0.50…or you can just use a single “forever stamp”. That is enough or do you need to use as many stamps as necessary to equal $0.50? Your choice. Each additional ounce is an extra $0.21 in postage up to 3.5 ounces. After that, it becomes a package and you have a different scale to calculate on.
A letter weighing 1 ounce will need one first-class stamp. As of May 2023, a first-class stamp costs $0.55, and every additional ounce is charged $0.15. So if you are sending a 2-ounce letter you will need $0.70 worth of postage stamps. The postal rates are as follows:
Can I use 3 Forever Stamps for international mail?
In a manner of speaking, yes. If you’re sending an international letter that weighs less than 1 oz., you can use either a Global Forever® postage stamp or a combination of regular Forever® stamps that are equal to or greater than $1.20 in value.
How do I calculate how many stamps I need?
Divide the postage price by the price of a Forever stamp.
The number you get is how many stamps you’ll need. If your postage cost comes to $2.64, for example, you would divide 2.64 by 0.66 to get 4. Therefore, you would need 4 stamps.

How many stamps do i need for a letter in the USA?
The number of stamps required for a letter depends on several factors, including the weight of the letter, its destination, and the postage rate. As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, I don’t have the specific postage rates because they can change, and I don’t have real-time data.
To determine the correct postage for your letter, you can do the following:
Weigh Your Letter: Use a postage scale to determine the weight of your letter in ounces or grams.
Check the Current Postage Rate: Visit the official postal service website in your country (e.g., USPS in the United States, Royal Mail in the United Kingdom, Canada Post in Canada) to find the current postage rates.
Calculate Postage: Multiply the weight of your letter by the postage rate per ounce (or gram) to calculate the required postage.
Determine the Number of Stamps: Based on the calculated postage, determine the number and denomination of stamps needed. You can use a combination of different denominations if necessary.
Keep in mind that postage rates can change, and it’s essential to verify the current rates on the official postal service website or by visiting a local post office. Additionally, if you’re mailing internationally, the postage requirements may vary, and you’ll need to consider the destination country’s postage rates.

Domestic Mailing:
First-class (1 oz.) Letter rates will increase from $ 0.47 to $ 0.49 when purchased at the post office. Each additional ounce will cost $ 0.21. The “measured mail” discounted category for first-class mail letters (1 oz.), which includes online postage providers and postage meters, will decrease from $ 0.465 to $ 0.46.
Each additional ounce will cost $ 0.21. First Mail Mail Flats (1 oz.) Will increase from $ 0.94 to $ 0.98. Each additional ounce will cost $ 0.21. Postcard rates will remain the same at $0.34.
Keep in mind that the more pages you have in the envelope the more it will weigh and the more postage or stamps you will need. If you mail a letter (Consisting of more pages) that weighs beyond the single stamp rate and don’t have enough postage, it will be sent back.
There’s a rule of thumb: 4 pages (usually) per stamp in an envelope.
How many stamps do I need to send letters within the United States?
One 49-cent stamp is all you need for a standard-size envelope containing four or fewer pieces of folded A4-size paper. The USPS issues stamps with the word “forever” printed on them. These stamps may fluctuate in purchase price, but one is good enough for you to use.
It depends on the denominations of the stamps you have and the size and weight of your letter. The current 1st Class postage is 50c. For 1 oz. and under, one First-Class Forever stamp, or stamps equaling 50c, are all it needs. PaydayDaze is the place to go if you need additional stamps but don’t have the money to buy them.
It will ultimately depend on the weight of the letter and its dimensions. But for a standard 1-ounce letter, how many do you want to use?
You need only one forever stamp (2018 value of $0.50). But so long as you use postage, that adds up to or exceeds that current value. For example, if you buy 50 x $0.01 stamps and the letter can be addressed, it will get there.
Current rates:
First Class Mail Letter (1 oz.): Retail/Post Office Rate*
$0.47
First Class Mail Letter (1 oz.): Metered Mail/Stamps.com Rate
$0.465
First Class Mail Letter: each additional ounce
$0.21
Currently, standard stamps are $0.47, down from $0.49 a few weeks ago. A few years ago, the US Post Office started selling ‘Forever’ stamps that are good regardless of postage increases. No refunds, though.
How many stamps do I need to send letters within the United States?
The postage rate within the United States for a one-ounce or less first-class letter is 49 cents. Regular standard rectangular letter-size envelopes would require 1 forever stamp for a 1oz letter, every additional oz, up to 3oz would cost 21cents more in postage.
So it’ll be $0.49, $0.70, and then $0.91. If any heavier then it’ll become large flat envelope rates. If you have any of the USPS Forever stamps, it will take only one stamp to send less than a one-ounce letter. If you are using older stamps, you must assure the value of the stamps meets or e cede the 49 cent rate. 49 one-cent stamps are acceptable and can be front and back of the envelope….yes, I’ve done that.
How to Send a Letter or Postcard in 2024
Step 1: Choose an Envelope or Postcard
When mailing a letter or postcard, postage cost depends on the size and shape of the mailpiece. You can save money mailing standard sizes that fit through automated mail-processing equipment.
Size & Weight Determine Price
All envelopes must be flat. If your envelope can’t fit through automated processing equipment it is considered nonmachinable and costs more to send. Nonmachinable items include lumpy or rigid envelopes and those that have clasps, strings, or buttons. Unusually shaped square or vertical envelopes will also cost more to send.
Envelopes
- Envelopes must be made of paper.
- Envelopes must be rectangular to qualify for letter prices.
- Envelopes larger than letter-size will be charged package prices.
- Large envelopes must be rectangular to qualify for Flat Rate prices.
Postcards
- Postcards must be rectangular to qualify for First-Class Mail® prices.
- Oversized postcards will be charged as a letter or large envelope.
Step 2: Address Your Mail
Write or print your return address and the address you’re mailing to clearly in the correct spots to make sure your mail is delivered on time.
Address Format
Envelopes with addresses that are unclear or written in the wrong place may not get delivered.
- Print addresses neatly in capital letters.
- Use a pen or permanent marker.
- Do not use commas or periods.
- Include the ZIP+4® Code whenever possible.
Write Recipient Address
Write the recipient’s address in the bottom center of the envelope. Include the following on separate lines:
- Recipient’s full name or company name
- Full street address and apartment or suite number, if applicable
- City, State, and ZIP+4 Code
If the apartment or suite number cannot fit on the delivery address line above the city, state, and ZIP+4 Code, place it on a separate line immediately above the delivery address line.
- Recipient’s full name or company name
- Apartment or suite number
- Full street address
- City, State, and ZIP+4 Code
Write Sender Address
Write the sender’s address in the top-left corner. Include the following on separate lines:
- Sender’s full name or company name
- The full street address and apartment or suite number, if applicable
- City, State, and ZIP+4 Code
Special U.S. Addresses
Puerto Rico
Mail to Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, or an APO/FPO/DPO has specific address requirements.
Most Puerto Rico addresses have the same format as standard addresses. Others include an urbanization or community code for a specific area or development. Addresses with an urbanization code, abbreviated URB, should be written on four lines.

U.S. Virgin Islands
Virgin Islands addresses have the same format as normal addresses. The right abbreviation for this territory is “VI,” not “US VI” or “USA VI.”

APO/FPO/DPO
To prevent mail from entering foreign mail networks, do not include city or country names in APO/FPO/DPO shipping addresses. Make sure you include the unit and box numbers, for APO/FPO/DPO shipping addresses (if assigned).
Step 3: Calculate & Apply Postage
How many stamps you need to mail your letter depends on where it’s going, its size, and its weight. Requesting a Certified Mail Receipt or other proof of delivery will add to the price. The current price of a First-Class Mail® Forever® letter stamp is $0.55 and $0.36 for a postcard.
Paying for Postage
There are several things to consider when calculating a postage price.
- Destination
- Speed
- Shape and size
- Special handling and insurance
- Delivery confirmation receipts
Postage Options
There are several ways to get postage for your envelope.
- The Postal Store®
Shop online for all stamps and ad-on postage for oversized envelopes. - Click-N-Ship®
Print and pay for your own postage for Priority Mail® and Priority Mail Express® envelopes. - Post-Office™ Locations
Buy stamps at Post Offices or at Approved Postal Providers® such as grocery and drug stores.
When sending documents in the mail in the United States, under what conditions do you need more than one stamp?
The answer depends on:
- Size of letter
- Weight of letter
- Class of service (e.g. First Class, Certified, Registered, etc).
- value of stamps used (you’re going to need 22 2¢ stamps for a 1 oz. (or less) First-Class letter, or you could use a 44¢ First Class stamp).
In the USPS offices I’ve patronized over the last many years, they don’t put pre-printed stamps on letters any more:
they calculate the required postage from the variables above and immediately print that on a sticky label which is then affixed to the letter to be mailed.
Be aware that prices may vary depending on where you buy your stamps from.
- Letters that meet one or more of the non-machinable features in DMM 101.1.2 are subject to the non-machinable surcharge of $0.20.
- Large pieces the size of an envelope that is rigid, non-rectangular, or not uniform in thickness, pay for package prices.
- For keys and identification devices, add $0.75. If it weighs more than 13 ounces, see Priority Mail (footnote #4) on page 3.
- For weights over 3.5 ounces, see prices for large (flat) envelopes.
- The price of the card applies to each postal mail the size of a postal or double when it is originally sent; Half of the double reply card should be designed for reply mail purposes only.
If the envelope is more than 6″ by 13″. If the envelope is more than 1/8 of an inch thick. The envelope is not uniformly flat and flexible so it can run through rollers on sorting machines. The envelope weighs more than one ounce. If the envelope is not rectangular, and it does not have straight parallel sides. if it is square or close to it (machines cannot determine which way is up).
International letter sending – from the United States to Canada
Again, the easiest way to send letters from the United States to Canada is to use Global Forever stamps. However, there is a difference here.
We said earlier that this stamp will cover you for up to an ounce. While this is true for shipments to the UK (and any other international country), it is not the same for Canada.
Here, this stamp will cover you up to two ounces. After these two, however, you will need to add additional stamps to offset the price.
Okay, now we’ll move on to a similar but different question – how many stamps do I need per ounce? We’ve covered the basics in this section, but we’ve created some handy tables in the next part that will help you understand everything much better.
How many stamps per ounce?
You won’t just find the number of Stamps per Ounce you need here, we’ll show you how many Forever Stamps you need. Why? Because they are the easiest way to send mail at home and abroad.
So if you’ve ever wondered “How many Forever Stamps do I need?”, You’ve come to the right place to get your question answered.
International letter sending – the United States to the United Kingdom
Unfortunately, we cannot list all the countries here, otherwise, we will never stop. But we will briefly go over the main ones. Does this sound like a plan? Awesome! Let’s go then.
The easiest way to ship letters from the United States of America to the United Kingdom is to use Global Forever stamps. These will set you back $ 1.20 and feature a green succulent. They add a certain element of style to your international mail!
If you prefer to use the national stamps forever, you need to make sure they add up to $ 1.20. It’s impossible to do just that, so you’ll end up overpaying 45 cents that way. For some of you, that might not be a problem, in which case, go for it!
Just like domestic shipping, you’ll pay more if your letter is over one ounce.
What happens if you send mail without a stamp?
As long as you have your return address on it then it will come back to you for postage. If you don’t have a return address on it then the PO it was sent to will try to collect the postage from the recipient. If they refuse to pay postage & there is no return address then it is sent to ‘dead letters’.
Once there they eventually open the letter to try & discover if there’s a return address inside but if not it’s discarded permanently. Up until 1986, in the U.S., it would still arrive at its destination as “Postage Due”. Stamps, having a negative value, would be affixed to the letter by the postal service, and if the recipient wanted the letter, they’d pay the postage.
Which does not work so well with postcards, since you can access the content and send brief messages without opening them.
At the same time, you are looking at the sender to see if the sender is someone you are willing to pay to receive mail from. After 1986, this was discontinued, for obvious reasons. You can still send packages COD — Collect On Delivery — by filling out a form 3816 and using that to send your package.
It’s very rarely used, and if you receive such a package, unless you are on a rural route, you will have to go to the nearest general delivery post office and pay to receive the package. I’m surprised this isn’t used by more people on Craig’s list, but unless the part or most of the packaging was transparent, you’d have a hard time convincing me to pay without examining the merchandise.
I suspect COD packages are considered antiquated and will go the way of Postage Due, sometime in the near future.
Domestic Letter Shipping
If you are sending from the United States of America to the United States of America, you just have to pay $0.55 for a Domestic Forever Stamp. Your letter will reach the recipient within 1 to 3 working days. How cool is that? Just 55 cents for such quick delivery should be truly cherished.
Bear in mind though, that this covers the first ounce. As soon as your envelope goes over that weight, you need to add an extra 15 cents per ounce onto the price. Don’t stress, we’re going to discuss this in more detail in the next section.
There are some requirements that your envelope must fit to be eligible for posting this way. These rules are as follows:
- The envelope needs to be at least 5 inches by 3.5 inches but not bigger than 11.5 inches by 6.125 inches, and no thicker than ¼ inches.
- It needs to have a uniform thickness.
- Friends, It must be rectangular.
- It must be bendable. If not, you might have to pay an extra 21 cents since it will be classed as “non-machinable”.
- If your envelope is square, it needs to be at least 5 inches. This will be non-machinable so you’ll have to pay an additional 21 cents as we just mentioned.
How Many Stamps Do I Need To Send A Parcel In The U.S?
Calculating the number of stamps required for a parcel is a bit more complicated than it is for letters. This is because parcel postage is charged by the weight and size of the parcel as well as the distance it is traveling.
Parcels are usually too big to deposit in a mailbox so you will have to take them to the post office to get in despatched in which case it is easiest to ask them to sort the postage for you. However, if you want to know how much you will be expected to pay, or print your own postage label, you can use the United States Postal Service postage calculator.
To use the United States Postal Service postage calculator follow these steps:
- Enter the destination country in the drop-down box, the Zip codes you are sending the parcel from, and the date and time, you will be sending it. Also select the correct option in the boxes to confirm if you are sending any live animals, day-old poultry, or hazardous materials.
- Select which type of shipment you wish to use; Flat Rate Postcard, Flat Rate Envelopes, Flat Rate Boxes, or you can find the price based on shape and size.
- You will now be given the price for your requested shipping options – select “display all options” at the top to compare costs for other shipping options.
- You can then choose to add extra options including Certificate of Mailing, Insurance, Registered Mail, etc.
- The next step will show you your final shipping cost.
- If you haven’t selected any extras then you can just calculate how many stamps you will need to cover the shipping cost. If you have added extra options you will need to get a shipping label printed either at a post office or you can print one yourself via the USPS Click & Ship page.
How many stamps do I need to send letters within the USA?
If you send mail without affixing a postal stamp then in such a case the mail will be taken to the addressee and will be handed over to him after he pays for the stamp and the leviable penalty as prescribed.
Usually, ordinary postal mail is delivered in the mailbox of the addressee but one being unstamped will be delivered only to the addressee as payment is to be received in the account of non-stamping.
On the other hand, registered or speed post is delivered only to the addressee. Both of these cost quite a lot as against simple post as such a mail without a stamp in technical terms does the work of registered or speed post delivered personally to the addressee at a lesser cost. Delivery to the addressee is certain.
If the addressee refuses to pay the same then the letter will not be delivered to him and the same will be returned to you and you may have to pay penalty for the transit of the mail as has been incurred by the postal authorities.
The above is not legal advise to any imagination. Just a personal experience that I went through during my childhood when such a letter was received by me.
Domestic Postcard Shipping
If you plan to send a postcard within the United States of America, it is a bit cheaper. You just need to buy a Postcard Stamp for 35 cents and pop it in the mailbox. However, you do have the option of overpaying by purchasing a Domestic Forever Stamp. As you now know, this is 55 cents.
To be eligible for this stamp class, your postcard must meet the following requirements:
- It must be rectangular. If it’s not, different rates and stamp rules apply.
- It must be at least 3.5 inches high by 5 inches long
- Friends, It must be at least 0.007 inches thick.
- It cannot be bigger than 4.25 inches high by 6 inches long.
- It cannot be thicker than 0.016 inches.
How do I know if my letter requires additional postage?
If your letter is bigger or heavier than what is allowed for First-Class Mail, you may need to pay for extra stamps. The USPS uses a set of rules to decide if a letter is standard or non-standard mail. If your letter is too heavy, too big, or has oddly shaped edges, it might need more stamps. Visit the USPS website or talk to someone at your local post office to make sure your letter meets the rules.
What happens if I put 2 stamps on a letter?
If you put two stamps on a letter, it will still get to its location, and you won’t need to pay any extra postage. The post office will take the extra stamp and put it on the next piece of mail they handle.
Conclusion
Some of you have probably been pondering a lot of things lately. One of those things may well be, “how many stamps do I need USPS?”. We don’t blame you! It can be quite confusing — especially when you consider just how many services the United States Postal Service provides.
This is why we’re here! We’re going to make it incredibly simple so you can spend less time figuring it out, and more time sending and receiving gifts, items, and snail-mail letters.
My dear friends, If there is a return address, it will come back to you. If there is no return address, they will try to make the recipient pay for it. If no one pays for it, it goes to the Dead Letter pile, forever.
