Simply put and reiterating their advice…this is how I do it…
RESPECTED SIR/MADAM (don’t use dear…they are not your dear. This is something that has become too commonplace today but is COMPLETELY INAPPROPRIATE…use “respected”).
Finish off the letter with “RESPECTFULLY”, not “sincerely”. Again it is a point of respect, not sincerity that is shown to a well known and close friend.

Simply say in the letter who you are and who you are writing this letter and the reason why.
I am completely taken aback by the way formal letter writing has become these days…really, dear? Everyone who writes me a letter is NOT my “dear”.
Stop using it unless they are your lover or your family. It is inappropriate to use that term all the time to anyone and everyone.
Basic etiquette…seems to have skipped a beat these days, but I grew up with old British English as my grandfather, who taught me English was a professor during the British Rules.
I stand by that old school English, for the most part…I’ve learned a few things over the years.
That is not so difficult. Make sure the objective of writing a Leave of Absence letter is to request for 1-day school leave. It will mainly depend on the reason you apply for school leave, whether or not you want to use a formal intonation.
Reasons for a legitimate 1 day Leave for School or College are:
- Calling in Sick ( contagious illness, such as the common cold or flu)
- Family issues, such as a sick child.
- Severe weather and you live remote
- Loss of a family member or loved one
- Household emergencies with big impact (water leakage)
- Severe mental health issues
- You have a student internship or job interview
And how to write such a leave letter for school or college?
When requesting a formal leave of absence, your letter should include:
- Request for a leave of absence for college;
- dates you expect to be away from college;
- the date you plan to return to college;
- Word of thanks for considering your request.

When I was in high school and an older friend of mine was in the Navy. One day his ship was going a “dependents cruise”, a day outing where friends and relatives could go out.
With my parent’s permission, I skipped school, including a final test (perhaps they didn’t know about that) and went for a ride.
