How are people using chat GPT?

CHATGPT: It has been on many people’s lips for the past few months. I will get straight to the answer without getting into all the nitty-gritty of what chat gpt is; I believe that’s been answered a whole lot of times 😉

I have been watching many videos on YouTube about how people have been using this chatbot in their businesses and even on the platform, and I am going to share some of the few fantastic uses I have picked up.

People use ChatGPT in various ways to assist with various tasks and applications. Some everyday use cases include:

  1. Information retrieval and research: Users can ask ChatGPT questions to obtain information on specific topics, get explanations, or seek insights on various subjects. ChatGPT can assist with finding relevant resources or providing summaries.
  2. Creative writing and content generation: ChatGPT can be utilized for creative writing, such as generating story ideas, character development, or even drafting short text passages. Writers and content creators can leverage ChatGPT’s language generation capabilities to aid their creative processes.
  3. Personal productivity: Users can employ ChatGPT as a personal assistant to organize their schedules, set reminders, create to-do lists, or receive suggestions for various tasks. It can act as a virtual productivity tool, helping users stay organized and efficient.
  4. Language practice and learning: ChatGPT can be used as a language learning tool, allowing users to practice conversational skills, ask language-related questions, or receive feedback on their writing. It can provide interactive language practice in a wide range of contexts.
  5. Prototyping and development: Developers and engineers can integrate ChatGPT into their applications or systems to create conversational interfaces. ChatGPT can power chatbots, virtual assistants, or customer support systems, providing interactive and dynamic user interactions.

It’s important to note that while ChatGPT is a powerful tool, responsible usage is essential. Users should be mindful of the limitations of AI systems, carefully review and verify generated content, and be aware of potential biases in the responses. OpenAI encourages users to provide feedback and exercise human oversight to ensure the safe and beneficial use of ChatGPT.

Generate ideas and brainstorm

People have been using chatbot as a productivity tool in growing their businesses online; they use it for brainstorming content creation ideas, for example

  • Coming up with blog post outline ideas
  • Business name generation
  • Printable ideas for print-on-demand stores

Or do you need to generate ideas for a theme for your kid’s upcoming birthday party? ChatGPT can help with that. The AI can even generate recipe ideas or entire meal plans. Okay, so of course, chat GPT is not a real doctor, but it can help you get really healthy, and this seriously blew my mind. So let’s say you want to get fit and healthy, gain muscle, and maybe lose weight. You can ask for a detailed exercise plan; it gives some great advice and a plan to follow.

2. Get personalized recommendations.

People have been asking ChatGPT to act as a shopping assistant, health assistant, or even a cinema concierge that gives customized movie recommendations tailored to their likes and dislikes.

It can even give you suggestions of games to play

3. Summarize for you

ChatGPT can summarize your research, including entire reports, web pages, or studies. You can provide some content that will summarize it for you.

For example, you can ask it to summarize YouTube videos, which is helpful, especially when the videos are long. Hit that copy button of the video you want and ask the chatbot to summarize it, then paste the link. It will do it in seconds.

4: Learning new Let’s say you want to learn something well instead of searching through Google or manuals. You can ask the chatbot to teach you whatever you want, and amazingly, it gives you a detailed guide and step-by-step instructions on how to do it.

You can even ask about machine learning or how quantum computing is used. This AI has all the answers.

It also does an excellent job teaching you different languages and even certain software like Photoshop, and remember, what’s wild is that this is all for free.

5. Analyze sentiment and tone.

6. write a CV or cover letter

People have been speeding up their job application process by having ChatGPT compose a cover letter and CVs.

You can ask the bot to write you a cover letter. Be sure to specify the job role and your experience, as this will ensure the letter is more tailored to the vacancy. That’s it! The AI bot will then write you a great letter in seconds.

As for the CV, you will need to put more effort into teaching the bot how you want the CV to be presented. You must provide detailed information about yourself so the bot can do its work.

I can’t name all of them because there are a zillion ways people use ChatGPT, and you have to think outside the box.

Can Chat GPT-4 replace software engineers?

I’ve been using ChatGPT with GPT-4 since it was announced.

For the past few weeks, I have been using ChatGPT with GPT-3 as my junior engineer for coding personal projects. ChatGPT is good at executing a well-delineated coding task. The output typically needs a little tweaking, but it is excellent to achieve tasks in a domain I need to become more familiar with, and it saves me a lot of time from reading documentation.

Interestingly, when coupled with GitHub Copilot (also powered by GPT), some of the problems in the generated solution become apparent or fix themselves when writing the suggested code in an editor.

From my point of view as a front-end engineer, the web API is extensive in scope, and nobody can quickly answer questions on “how do you do X” or “how do you do Y” on the more obscure aspects of the API. ChatGPT can, and while it’s not always right, directionally, it’s usually on the money.

With GPT-4, I am confident in letting it handle slightly more significant projects. It’s like my junior engineer got promoted! I asked it to create a VS Code extension that did a specific task yesterday. I previously wrote about VS code extensions; I love this kind of project, but I needed to remember everything about how to get started there. ChatGPT created my extension from scratch. Now, it didn’t work, but the scaffolding, which is the part I would dread the most if I had to create it from scratch, was perfect.

I also asked it to create a small interactive demo with Canvas. Again, the demo itself didn’t work as intended, and what exactly is wrong will take a little bit of time to figure out, but the overall architecture of the app is solid. One thing that finds me odd is that the generated code doesn’t have any comments, even though my understanding is that GPT-4 will translate the requirements into intents, which will then be transformed into code so that we can have a description of the purpose of the classes and methods.

ChatGPT is a fantastic accelerant for coding tasks. In a world where all software engineers do is, when given precise requirements, produce code that implements these requirements to a T, then for most of us, it would be time to explore other careers.

However, there are apparent concerns about an application entirely (or primarily) generated through ChatGPT. Let’s pause for a minute and think about how to build an app or a service. As an analogy, let’s try to think about what it is to build a house. As a person who “experiences” a house, you could describe it as a succession of spaces. It has a front door, a lobby, a kitchen with certain appliances, a living room, etc. Now, let’s imagine a robot building a house in space. Again, first, the door, according to specs.

Perfect; it looks like a door. Then a lobby. Then, a hallway. There’s a door in the hallway to a kitchen. There’s a door in the hallway to a living room. Wait. Does our house under construction make any sense? Is it going to form a convex, continuous shape? Can I build a second floor on top, a basement, etc., and have everything work well together?

The same goes for systems implemented with chatGPT, feature by feature.

The resulting code will be very brittle and need a substantial refactor at every step. One way to avoid this (same for the house metaphor) is to devise a sensible, high-level plan or architecture. That’s still the realm of the human engineer. The other task will be to evaluate what’s being generated at every step and develop systems to ensure that we (humans and robots) are still building the right thing.

Anyway. Humans will be around for a while, and ChatGPT/GPT-4 is not at a stage where they can build a complex system from the ground up. But the nature of the work is changing, and it’s changing more rapidly than most of us thought.

Update

Many folks in the comments are minimizing ChatGPT and LLMs’ impact on the developer’s role. Look. The cat is out of the box now. We’re simply not going back to how things were before. Code generation has been in the developer’s toolbox for years, but this technique has developed by leaps and bounds over the last two years.

ChatGPT 4 still needs to improve on many things, as it would come up with a worse solution as a novice developer for some problems. It could be better at naming, organizing, and keeping track of things. It needs to understand what a human user wants and focus on producing correct code, not helpful output. Testing is also an afterthought. On the other hand, it’s just getting started.

ChatGPT will give you the illusion of being on the right track by outputting many individually correct bits of code. Anyone who has ever had to review a large pull request will know how hard it is to spot a problem when small chunks of code seem correct one by one (and also when there are no tests). And it can produce exactly what you want and save you a ton of research. However, it won’t necessarily do a better job than a Google search that would point you to a recent article. If you try to do a task, you can reasonably be sure many others have attempted it. Looking for best practices is the right way to go.

ChatGPT is going to do considerably worse. If you’re trying to do something unique or a well-isolated task that you are unlikely to revisit once executed, then ChatGPT will do an excellent job. There are some examples on that front. I asked ChatGPT to help me scaffold a new project. That’s a problem space, like the back of my hand, but it’s still tedious, so I am okay with someone else doing it for me.

ChatGPT’s work could have been better. It messed up how everything should be configured because, by default, it would come up with settings for old versions of these modules even when it knew the correct syntax for the latest versions. So, overdoing this from scratch is a complete loss of time. On the other hand, I also asked ChatGPT to implement a pseudo-random generator inspired by a given algorithm and implement a Perlin noise library. ChatGPT did an amazing job; the math was right the first time, and the coding style was superb.

Like it or not, as developers, a significant part of our job is to do research. There have always been many ways to do that: search engines, searching your codebase if you work in a large organization or public repositories, and Q&A sites. ChatGPT is carving itself a niche in that research budget. Some of the tasks that could be done with other tools before are going to be able to be done more effectively with ChatGPT; however, there will be a flipside to that: using ChatGPT will come with overhead costs, as answers will have to be verified and tested.

How do I use Chat GPT wisely?

  • You can ask your academic-related questions to Chat GPT.
    • Chat GPT never gets irritated like the teachers who say, “Don’t be afraid of asking doubts. Ask me 100 times, and I’ll be ready to explain.
  • Need captions for your fantastic photos? Ask Chat GPT.
    • Stop nagging your best friend every time. That poor soul also has a life.
  • Feeling hungry? Have limited ingredients? Ask Chat GPT to suggest a delicious recipe using those ingredients.
    • “MOM! I’M A CHEF NOW!!”

In short, Chat GPT can be used wisely for various purposes, but please don’t use it for plagiarism. And even if you’re using it for that purpose, kindly use your brain before copying every word. People are not fools.
