Boyfriend fell for a limelight media pyramid scheme scam, can they force him to pay?
Without going into too much detail, my boyfriend fell for what basically seems to be a scam by this company named Lime Light Media. He signed up for a $7500 course that claimed to make you a sales expert and guarantee you an income of tens thousands of dollars a month. He paid a $500 down payment, realized he shouldn’t do this, then called his bank to cancel the payment. His bank told them they can dispute the claim and get his money back.
The payment is still pending and when it goes through they said they will dispute it. Afterwards, he still decided to sign a contract agreement to finance the rest of the payment for 3 years with interest beginning after the first year. The first payment is supposed to be charged September 1 2023 according to this contract. He did not receive a copy of the contract.
He told me about this today and I told him it sounds like a scam. He seems to think so too, did his research and thought the same thing, but still decided to go through with it out of desperation for a better paying job. After talking about it, he wants out of the contract.
We sent an email to Lime Light media stating he does not want to go through with the program and is cancelling his purchase, and does not want any further payments to be charged to his account because he is cancelling it. We also sent an email to the bank (?) affiliated with Lime Light media, whom he signed the financing contract with, saying the same thing. Their website’s cancellation policy says installment plans are not eligible for refund, but since he hasn’t made any payments besides the down payment, I’m thinking he can still cancel it? Since he’s not really asking for a refund?
After talking to the bank again they said they can’t do anything to get him out of the contract but they can try to dispute any charges they make.
I feel like because we cancelled it before they began charging his account, he should be clear and not have to pay the rest of the amount… Is this the case? Can they force him to pay the rest even if he cancels the program and doesn’t use the product?
