Impacts of Bitcoin mining on the ecosystem

Although almost everyone is familiar with the term bitcoin these days, for those who do not know, bitcoin is a digital currency that does not work under any organization. You can also trade in bitcoins, that is, sell and buy them to gain profit; not knowing how to trade is not a problem. If you want to buy and sell bitcoin, you may look for a trusted platform like the bitcoin evolution. The use of bitcoins is increasing worldwide; apart from the numerous benefits offered by bitcoins, this increasing popularity also adds to the environmental damage caused rapidly by bitcoin mining.

The process of validating and recording new bitcoins is called bitcoin mining. While mining, the miners compete with other miners to come up with nonce( number used data); after finding the nonce, the target hash is generated. This helps the miner get a new block added to the previous block.

There is significant competition between miners because the winning miner gets a new block and a transaction fee paid by the sender. Although mining has many advantages for miners, it cannot ignore its adverse environmental effects. To know about the impacts of bitcoin mining on the ecosystem, refer to the article below.

Energy consumption and emission of greenhouse gases

When many different miners in different parts of the world try to find the correct nonce using the trial and error method, the process might take trillions of trials. Moreover, the process takes thousands of computers around the globe making guesses on nonce, resulting in bitcoin consuming energy at every transaction. In addition to the energy consumed by bitcoins, computers also need the energy to work; computers tend to heat up after working for some time and are supposed to be kept cool.

It is said that the energy consumed in the process of bitcoin mining is more than the energy consumption of entire Argentina and even more than the energy consumed by Microsoft, Google, Apple, and Facebook combined. The condition worsens daily as the number of miners competing increases, leading to more energy consumption. The increasing bitcoin energy consumption is considered a significant reason for climate change.

But it is never too late to take measures against a problem; everything will be sorted if bitcoin mining consumes more renewable energy sources. It is found that the bitcoin farms established in countries depending on fossil fuels have a higher risk to the environment than the countries where renewable energy like hydropower, wind, and solar energy is used. The United States is said to be affected the most by the increasing bitcoin mining and the negative impacts caused on the environment.

Electronic waste

It is stated that bitcoin mining generates up to 30.7 kilotonnes of electronic waste annually. The devices used for mining usually work well for 1.29 years; after this period, they stop producing the same results and need to be changed. As these devices use ASIC technology, they cannot be renewed and have to be replaced by new ones. There is already so much waste globally, and the old used devices also add to this enormous amount.

Possible solutions

Recycling the technologies used in bitcoin mining can be beneficial as it will reduce e-waste. Also, educating people about the advantages of using renewable energy sources can generate awareness among them. Moreover, discussing when non-renewable sources of energy like fossil fuels will disappear sometime soon can motivate people to reduce the consumption of such sources, leading to more sustainable use of power sources.

Several steps are already being taken in this regard; this includes the meeting between Elon Musk and some heads of bitcoin mining companies; the meeting was scheduled to discuss the creation of a “bitcoin mining council” the council will aim to promote transparency of energy.

In conclusion, converting bitcoin into an energy-efficient system cannot be done overnight since a hefty sum of money is invested in developing infrastructure and other system sources. However, looking at the present situation of threats to energy supplies and environmental damage, it is the need of the hour to take some measures to reduce the adverse effects of mining on the ecosystem. Considering the solutions mentioned above can effectively reduce the negative impacts of bitcoin mining.
