In June 2020, just three months after the COVID-19 pandemic hit, 42% of American workers were working from home. Even after the restrictions started to lift and workplaces started to reopen, many of those remote workers continued to work full-time or even part-time from home.

Nicholas Bloom, an economist at Stanford University, notes that the stigma once associated with working from home has disappeared. Working remotely is now common and many employers have already developed plans to keep at least part of their work force working from home after the pandemic recedes.

Bloom, together with the University of Chicago and the Atlanta Federal Reserve, conducted a survey that indicated that “the share of working days spent at home is expected to increase fourfold from pre-COVID levels, from 5 percent to 20 percent.”

That means that, if you’re planning on being hired any time in the future, you need to be prepared to work from home. Get Comfortable

You need to invest in equipment that will make your work-a-home experience comfortable. If you dread sitting down at your home office every day because you know that you’re going to get a backache or stiff neck at the end of the day, you’re not going to be very productive.

The next step is an ergonomic keyboard which tilts in a way that ensures that your hands and wrists are in the most comfortable position. Many people who do a lot of typing end up with carpal Tunnel Syndrome but if you have a proper ergonomic keyboard your risk of developing hand and wrist problems drops significanty.

Take the time to prepare your workspace.

First, your setup should include a stable internet connection, wi-fi, chargers, a webcam and a proper monitor. Your computer should be powerful enough to allow you to move quickly from task to task. If you keep your system updated it will work faster.

People who work on-site, in an office, generally work in tandem with others who are in close physical proximity. Therefore, they don’t necessarily need individual versions of collaborative software. But when everyone is at home, even part of the time, these online tools are essential for the production of an efficient and effective work flow.

Needed software includes communication tools like Zoom, Skype ad Slack, project management tools such as Workfront, Monday.com, Trello and ProofHub and remote access tools such as Splashtop Business Access. People in management positions should have management and monitoring tools such as Officevibe, Hubstaff and JotForm up and working.
