Note: Chat from live streams cut off in the Video Editor will not play.

Live chat badges

Live chat badges will identify the broadcaster and moderator. If your channel is eligible for memberships, you can create custom badges for members that also appear in live chat.

How to send a message

Click the “Say something” section to post messages in live chat and start typing. Then click the send icon.

Reply to someone in the chat feed.

If you want to reply to someone in the chat feed, mention their username. 

  1. Writes “@.”
  2. Start typing the username.
  3. Select the username. 

You and the user you mentioned will see their usernames highlighted in live chat. It will make it easier for them to see your response in the chat feed. 

message limits

Users are limited to 200 characters and a maximum of 11 posts every 30 seconds. Event owners are not subject to the frequency cap. Users cannot post special characters, URLs, or HTML tags.

Exclusive chats for subscribers or members

A channel can make its live chats exclusive to members or subscribers. 

If the chat is subscriber-only, the channel can set a subscription age requirement for users. To find out about it and how long ago you signed up, tap Info in the live chat message box.

How to pin a message

You can pin your own or a user’s message in Live Chat.

Only you can pin messages, not moderators or users. Pinned messages are displayed below Super Chats.

  1. Go to the chat window during a live stream or Premiere.
  2. Choose any Live Chat message (including one from you) and select More.
  3. To pin the message, select Pin.

Note: You can only pin one message at a time. To replace a pinned message, pin another. To unpin a message, click More on it and tap Unpin.

How to create a live poll

Channel owners can create and manage live polls during their broadcasts and Premieres. Votes cannot be changed once cast.

  1. Schedule or start a live stream or Premiere.
  2. At the bottom of the chat window, tap Create a poll.
  3. Create your survey and select Ask your community.

To end a survey and view the results in chat, tap End Survey in the banner at the top of the chat.


Live polls have the following limitations:

  • They can only be created from YouTube on a computer.
  • They can have between 2 and 4 options.
  • They can only be seen live. They do not appear in live chat replays.
  • They can only last up to 24 hours.

How to add live chat

You can embed live chat on your site during a broadcast using an iframe.

Note: You can’t embed live chat on the mobile web.

  • Is the URL of the iframe. Note that the value of “embed_domain” must match the URL of the page where you will embed the chat. If they are different, the embedded chat will not load.
